Bus tour of London — 11 a.m. to approximately 2-3 p.m.
This is a “hop on, hop off” tour, so some of you might spend more time in one place than another.

Monday, May 25
9 a.m. class time
Bank Holiday, so we won’t have any “official” places to go. We’ll instead meet (place TBA based on our evaluation of accommodations!) to discuss class expectations, the syllabus, the blog and the program.

11.15 a.m. – Taxi ride from DCU to the front gates of Kilmainham Jail
12.00 p.m. – 1.30 p.m. – Guided tour of the Jail. Built in 1796 and witness to Ireland’s turbulent passage from the late eighteenth to early twentieth century. Prisoners from the United Irish Rebel-lion of 1796, the Emmet Rebellion of 1803, the Great Famine of 1845 to 1851, the Young Ireland Rebellion of 1848, the Fenian Rebellion of 1867, the Land War of the 1880s, the Easter Rising of 1916, the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War were held and often executed here.

1.30 p.m. – 2.30 p.m. – Taxi journey to Grafton Street for lunch in Café Bar Deli

10.45 a.m. – Group meet at the front entrance of Leinster House, the Irish Parliament building
11.00 a.m. – 12.00 p.m. – Dail Eireann, Kildare Street, Irish Parliament Building – guided tour with Captain of the Guard, Tom McGrath. This tour will give students an insight into the political frame-work of Ireland charting the history of the Parliament and the various political parties.
12.00 – 12.45 p.m. – Group meeting with a Government Press Officer in Dail Eireann
Afternoon Session
1.00 p.m. – 2.00 p.m. – Group Lunch – Location TBC
2.15 p.m. – 3.45 p.m. A group meeting with Irish journalists in Trinity College. Paul McDermott, a lecturer and radio broadcaster, will speak on the Irish media landscape – the main players and challenges to the industry. John Holden, a journalist with The Irish Times and politics lecturer will talk on Irish politics and John Mooney, an investigative journalist with The Sunday Times, will talk about his career and challenging stories to date. Q&A session to follow.

Sunday, 14 June – Full Day Trip (EXTRA CREDIT)
Wicklow Tour – Glendalough – Co. Wicklow – Visit mysterious mountains and waterfalls in the
garden county of Ireland. Optional outing to Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, approximately 40-miles from Dublin. The tour is €22.00 and coordinated by Over The Top Tours.
Pre-booking and confirmation is required. The tour takes in the mountains, lakes and waterfalls of Co. Wicklow. This is an excellent trip, good fun and an option really worth considering.

Part B – Northern Ireland

Monday, 15 June (blog: Paige)
Tour of Northern Ireland
Depart at 9.00 a.m. from Dublin City University with Shamrocker Tours for a tour of Northern Ire-land.This three-day tour takes in the Donegal, Derry, Antrim Coast, Giants Causeway and Omagh Folk Park.

Day 1 – Dublin – Kilcar – Immerse yourself in Ireland’s historic past at the impressive Trim Castle – a twelfth century Anglo Norman fortress which some would say was where the Troubles all began …. back then. Up next are the awe-inspiring prehistoric tombs at Lough Crew – which are older than the pyramids of Giza! Then sure why not relax over a pint or take a stroll in picturesque En-niskillen – a pretty island town on Lough Erne infamous from the troubled 80s just over the North-ern Border. Then it’s onto Donegal with accommodation in Kilcar.

Day 2 – Kilcar – Derry – The wilds of Donegal are your oyster today as we take you through the bog lands and deserted beaches of this undiscovered corner of Ireland, where if you’re lucky you’ll spot an eagle or two. Across the border to Derry city for a walk along the Bloody Sunday trail to learn of a troubled past and see the political murals.

Wednesday, 17 June (Blog: Eric)
Day 3- Derry – Belfast – A beautiful coastal drive takes us straight to Dunluce Castle, thought to be one of the most romantic and picturesque of Irish castles. Find your own space at the mysterious Giant’s Causeway. With its thousands of hexagonal columns it is a source of many a legend, and on a clear day you can see right across to Scotland! Not for the faint hearted, the next stop is the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge* swaying 80ft above the ocean. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of Antrim glens as you journey to Northern Ireland’s capital city – Belfast.
*Rope Bridge–weather permitting

9.00 a.m. – Black Cab pick up at hostel
9.30 – 11.00 a.m. – Take a world famous Black Cab tour into the troubled heartlands of the city to see political murals and learn of conflict and resolution. (murals at the Falls and Shankill Road) This ‘Tour of the ‘Troubles’ takes in The Falls, The Shankill, Carrickhill, Sandyrow, became buried under bombed buildings, barricades and military bases. These areas have now emerged from ‘The Troubles’ into the modern, trendy, multicultural city of Belfast.

Afternoon Session
13.00 a.m. – 2.30 p.m. – Belfast Telegraph, a tour around Northern Ireland’s leading newspaper followed by a group Q&A with some of the newspapers journalists.

11.00 a.m. – 1.15 p.m. Belfast City Hall and Meeting with Major of Belfast (Name TBC) and group Q&A session

3.30 – 5.00 p.m. – Harland & Wolfe Titanic Tour – Group meet at the Lagan Boat Company. This Titanic tour takes in the historic Harland & Wolff shipyards and the famous Titanic sites around Belfast Harbour.

10.45 a.m. – Group assembles at Edinburgh Castle on the Royal Mile.
11.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m. – Edinburgh Castle & Castle Rock
Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle is unequalled in the whole of the British Isles. Over one thousand years of history sits on top of the famous Edinburgh rock.

Afternoon Session
2.00 p.m. – 3.30 p.m. – Scottish Parliament, Parliament Headquarters, Royal Mile. Briefing session in the main Parliament chamber with a tour of the Parliament and talk on the works of the Scottish Parliament

7.15 p.m. – Ghosts and Ghouls Tour
Meet outside the Witchery Restaurant at the top of Royal Mile. The Witchery Tours take a light-hearted look at Edinburgh’s darker side including tales of witchcraft, plague and torture. The tour information is gathered from city records, library documents and historical archives. You will be led around the Old Town of Edinburgh by a deceased tour guide who regales various ghoulish tales. Watch out for the “jumper ooters” en route
